Brooklyn Cyclones ‘ Matt Oberste Interview

Matt Oberste grew up in Oklahoma as a lone ranger. As the majority of the population flocked to the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers, he sought solace with another team: The New York Mets. His favorite player? David Wright, who he modeled himself after growing up.

Oberste was selected by the Mets in the seventh-round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft and quickly signed with the organization. The Oklahoma native broke the Oklahoma University consecutive hit streak record by hitting safely in 30 consecutive games this year with the club and profiles as a first baseman in the organization. He’s set to make his professional debut this week with the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Around Citi had the opportunity to talk to the opportunity to catch up with Oberste on Sunday night. You can listen to the full interview below on the BlogTalkRadio media player, subscribe to Around Citi Live on iTunes, or visit the official page here.

Growing up a Mets fan: “Wright is my favorite player and he has been a part of the Mets organization since I started. Everyone where I’m from likes the Texas Rangers or St. Louis Cardinals and I wanted to be different.”

Playing with Jonathan Gray and Dillon Overton: “It was great playing with them. They’re great pitchers and guys all around. You know you aren’t going to have to do much on defense when they’re on the mound…I think they’re going to do great things and go far.”

Potentially facing Jonathan Gray: “We joke about that all the time. He’s like Matt, when I face you I’m going to strike you out. He’s actually more excited about getting to hit. He’s looking forward to hitting.”

Finding out he had been drafted: “I couldn’t help but smile. I couldn’t get the smile off my face.”

New York City Traffic: “I’ve walked everywhere so far. I’ve heard (the traffic) is difficult.”
