How does Jon Niese match-up against the Dodgers?
Top New York Mets prospect Michael Conforto will make history tonight when he becomes the 1,000th player to don a Mets uniform.
But it is the club’s second-longest tenured player, left-handed pitcher Jon Niese, who tonight will have a greater burden of responsibility facing the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers are the National League’s second-best offensive team, posting a team on-base plus slugging (.754) exactly 100 points greater than the Mets (.654). The Dodgers rank first in the National League in home runs (119) and second in total bases (1,360).
In six career starts against the Dodgers, Niese has a 3.79 ERA, and has held Adrian Gonzalez, Yasiel Puig and Howie Kendrick hitless in 20 at-bats. However, Andre Either is 4-10 against the southpaw in his career, and is in the midst of a resurgent season. Though the successful sample is small, it holds significant in a big game for the Mets.
The Mets, despite being only two games over .500, currently sit three games behind the Washington Nationals in the National League East.
