New York Mets pitchers impress during indoor sessions
A torrential rain this morning halted outdoor workouts for New York Mets players on picture day.
Pitchers briefly made their way to Practice Field 2 shortly after 10:00 a.m. to warm-up before Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee, Bartolo Colon and Rafael Montero threw indoor bullpen sessions.
“Whoa, baby, I liked that one,” exclaimed Mets manager Terry Collins after watching a Zack Wheeler fastball pop catcher Anthony Recker’s glove.
Alongside Wheeler, Gee gripped a changeup and said he had yet to throw one this spring. The changeup broke just as well as an early Spring Training breaking pitch would be expected.
When Gee and Wheeler concluded their session, a foil pair of 41-year-old Colon and 24-year-old Montero stepped in. Colon displayed the kind of pinpoint accuracy that has allowed him to pitch into his 40s, while Montero’s fastball routinely cracked the catcher’s glove.
